A chat screenshot or confirmation screen can include details the recipient does not need. Decide what they should see, then cover the remaining information before sharing. This is our practical review workflow, not a guarantee that an edited image cannot identify someone.
Choose how to cover an area
Open blur and cover image areas and select one image. The tool offers three modes for rectangles you place manually.
| Mode | What the tool does | Our suggested use |
|---|---|---|
| Blur | Softens detail inside the rectangle | Reduce distracting detail, then check whether it remains readable |
| Pixelate | Replaces the area with blocks of colour | Inspect both text and shapes that may remain recognisable |
| Solid cover | Replaces the selected pixels with opaque black | Prefer this when characters or numbers must not remain visible in that area |
Softening or pixelating an area does not mean all information has disappeared. For phone numbers, account numbers or private text, we suggest a solid cover with a little margin around the complete content.
Cover every occurrence
- Drag between two corners to create a rectangle. Include the first and last characters.
- Add other rectangles for names, profile pictures, addresses or unwanted details. The tool does not detect these automatically.
- Undo removes the latest rectangle. You can also clear all rectangles and start again.
- Inspect again after changing mode or strength: these controls update all existing rectangles.
The dashed outlines help you position areas. Check the actual image inside them; an outline alone does not prove that you covered all the information.
Inspect the exported image
Choose PNG or JPG and download. The tool writes the effect into image pixels using Canvas image-data operations documented by MDN. It clears the image from its list after export.
Open the actual downloaded file and zoom into each area. Also check headers, notifications and repeated information elsewhere in the conversation. This tool may reduce large images to a maximum long side of 4,096 pixels, so confirm that information intended for the recipient is still readable.
Visible details and hidden metadata are different
Covering text does not check whether the original contains location or camera metadata. See removing GPS location from photos for that separate task.
For a shop name or caption, use text watermarks after preparing the image. Do not substitute translucent watermark text for covering private content. Keep your original appropriately stored and share only the reviewed copy.
