Why Merged PDF Pages Have Different Sizes

Separate PDF page dimensions from print scaling, choose Fit or Actual size deliberately, and check a mixed-size document before sending or printing.

When some pages in a merged document are wider or taller, first decide whether the problem affects reading, printing or a recipient’s submission rules. Merge PDF copies the source pages; it does not resize them all to A4.

Identify the actual problem

Our first check is to open the downloaded document and inspect the unusually sized pages. A viewer’s fit-to-window zoom can make different pages look similar, so do not treat on-screen scale as proof of physical paper size.

Symptom What to check
Everything is readable, but page edges differ Whether the recipient requires uniform page dimensions
Content is cut off on paper Paper choice and print scaling
A page is sideways Page rotation, separately from size
A template must retain physical measurements Scale and a test print before printing the batch

Reducing a file’s megabyte size is not the same task as changing its page dimensions. Compression is therefore not the first step for this problem.

Choose print scaling deliberately

Adobe describes Acrobat’s Fit as scaling to the printable area, Actual size as printing without scaling and potentially clipping oversized content, and Shrink oversized pages as reducing large pages without enlarging small ones.

Our recommendation for ordinary reading copies on one paper size is to inspect a Fit preview first. For measurement-sensitive templates, check Actual size with suitable paper and a test print instead of choosing Fit just to fill the sheet.

Acrobat also offers Choose paper source by PDF page size. If you want mixed-size paper output, check your printer’s trays and capabilities. Other applications may use different option names.

When every page must be A4

FileMyLove does not currently have a tool that directly normalises all existing PDF pages to A4. Our suggested route is to set the page size in each source document, export fresh PDFs and then merge. If only PDFs are available, use a program that can change page dimensions and inspect its output.

A print-scaling setting controls that print job; it does not rewrite the original file. Do not send the unchanged PDF assuming that selecting Fit made all its stored pages equal.

Check the final document as a set

  1. Compare page count and document order with the recipient’s list.
  2. Use Organize PDF to move, remove or rotate pages when needed.
  3. Reopen the saved file and check the first page, document boundaries and last page.
  4. For paper output, test the largest and smallest pages before printing the batch.

See the PDF merging workflow for file order, and rotating or cropping PDFs for orientation and visible page boundaries.
