Missing Images When Extracting a PDF: Small Logos, Repeats and Scans

Check small-image filtering, duplicates and scanned pages when PDF image extraction produces unexpected results. Choose the right export for the job.

By FileMyLove2 min read

If a PDF shows several pictures but extraction returns fewer files, do not immediately assume the document is damaged. Not every visual element on a page is stored as a separate bitmap. Use these checks with extract images from PDF before repeating the same conversion.

Identify the symptom

Result What to check
A small logo is missing Is the skip-small-images option enabled?
A repeated logo produces one file The tool skips duplicates rather than exporting every occurrence
A chart or line drawing is absent It may be a vector object rather than a bitmap
An image contains the entire page and its text The page may have been scanned as a single image
A large document produces an incomplete set Check device and output-count limits

Adobe distinguishes extracting raster images from exporting vector objects. A chart constructed from lines and shapes may therefore be absent from the extracted image list.

Try disabling the small-image filter

In FileMyLove, enabling this option skips images with either side below 48 pixels. If you are looking for a small emblem or icon, disable the option and try again.

Output filenames include a page number and image sequence to help you compare them with the PDF. The count still need not match what you see: repeated images are skipped, and some elements may be drawings.

Choose separate images or whole pages

For a product picture separate from surrounding text, continue with extraction. To preserve a chart together with axis labels, captions and page placement, use PDF to JPG or PNG, which creates an image of the whole page.

If the source is a single scan, extraction does not automatically separate a product photo from text inside that scan. Our suggested alternative is to export the page and crop the required area in the photo editor, keeping a full-page copy for comparison.

Inspect the exported files

Choose PNG or JPG. One extracted image downloads as an image file; several download as a ZIP. The tool creates new images from decoded data rather than returning the camera originals byte for byte. Compare colour, transparency and detail with the PDF page.

The tool retains at most 500 images per run and may skip pictures exceeding the device's canvas capacity. For a large document, try splitting the PDF into page ranges and review each section. File count alone does not prove that every image was extracted.

See the PDF to JPG/PNG guide when choosing whole-page output and image formats.
