PNG vs JPG: Why a Transparent Background Disappears

Choose PNG or JPG for logos, product pictures and photos. Understand transparency and check the exported image before sending it.

If a logo acquires a solid rectangle after conversion, check the output format. JPG does not support transparency; PNG can.

Choose what the image needs to preserve

Task Suggested starting point
A logo placed on different colours A PNG that actually contains transparency
A screenshot or sharp text Try PNG and check file size
A photograph without transparency Try JPG and inspect the result
A service requiring JPG Prepare a suitable solid background

The W3C PNG specification describes lossless compression. MDN describes JPEG as a lossy format suited to photographs. The table is our practical starting point, not a universal rule.

Converting back does not remove the background

Transparency is image data. Once a white background is stored as pixels in a JPG, converting that file to PNG retains those pixels. The new format can support transparency, but conversion does not decide which pixels to remove.

Keep the transparent original and create a separate JPG only when needed. Do not replace your source with an exported copy.

Convert, then inspect

Use convert image, select the output format and save a copy. You can also go directly to PNG to JPG or JPG to PNG.

Our suggested checks are:

  1. View the output against another background colour.
  2. Zoom in on text and logo edges.
  3. Confirm the format and size accepted by the destination.

File conversion and background removal are separate operations. The converter is not being presented here as an automatic background remover.

When the file is too large

Try compress image, choosing a format that retains the properties you need. Inspect the downloaded result again. For reducing pixel dimensions, read resizing images for upload.

There is no single quality setting suited to every image. Work with copies and keep the source so you can make a different export later.
