Why CSV formula text does not calculate after conversion to XLSX

Understand why =1+2 stays text in FileMyLove CSV-to-Excel output, and choose between a workbook with formulas and a file containing final values.

By FileMyLove Team2 min read

After converting CSV to XLSX, a cell may show =1+2 instead of 3. That does not necessarily mean the file is broken. FileMyLove preserves this input as text; it does not turn it into an active formula. This guide concerns CSV-to-Excel in the document converter.

Formula-looking text is still text

Microsoft's documentation distinguishes a workbook formula from its stored result. An equals sign in a string alone does not establish that an XLSX cell contains a formula.

FileMyLove separates supported plain numeric values from text while reading CSV. It writes =1+2 as a text cell, with no formula evaluation step.

CSV value Output from this converter
=1+2 The original text, not the calculated value 3
3 The number 3
Total A text label
00123 Text preserving leading zeros

This describes FileMyLove, not every application's CSV import behaviour. Opening the original CSV elsewhere may produce different interpretation from opening this converted XLSX.

Decide what the recipient needs

For final numbers, ask the data owner for confirmed results. For further formula editing, request the original Excel workbook. Changing CSV into XLSX cannot reconstruct missing formulas or references across sheets.

For the reverse direction, read why Excel formulas become values in CSV. Exporting results and importing formula-looking strings are different situations.

Check before sharing

  1. Keep the source CSV, then convert to XLSX.
  2. Download and open the result.
  3. Inspect example cells beginning with = and any totals the recipient needs.
  4. Compare numbers with confirmed source data; do not expect the converter to calculate them.
  5. If active formulas are required, have the spreadsheet owner create and verify them in a spreadsheet application.

Avoid changing an entire column blindly

Our recommendation is to separate data fields from formula fields before editing. Forcing a whole text column into another type can also change values whose formatting matters. Do not activate unfamiliar formulas simply to remove a visible equals sign.

FileMyLove performs conversion in your browser. The resulting workbook can be used for further data work, but this converter is not an Excel formula calculation engine.
