A form asks for JPG, so you rename photo.png to photo.jpg, but the upload still fails. The extension and the data inside the file are separate things. Use the image converter to produce a new image in the requested format.
Renaming versus converting
Microsoft explains that changing an extension does not change a file's format. A new name can help organise a folder; it does not make an application decode the picture and write a different format.
| Action | Expected result |
|---|---|
Rename photo.png to portrait.png |
A different name for finding the file |
Rename photo.png to photo.jpg |
A JPG name without converting the existing data |
| Select JPG in the converter and download | An image produced by a conversion step |
FileMyLove reads the image and encodes the output, rather than just changing its name. The destination may have additional acceptance rules, so read its requirements too.
Create the file the destination needs
- Keep the original. Use the copy from before the rename if available.
- Open the converter and select an image that can be opened successfully.
- Choose the requested format, such as JPG, and convert.
- Download to a folder you can find easily.
- Open the downloaded picture to check it, then select that new file for submission.
Our recommendation is to keep originals and submission copies in separate folders. Similar names make it easy to select yesterday's file by mistake.
If it still fails
Check any size and dimension limits shown by the destination. Converting to JPG does not guarantee a file below its size limit. See why a compressed image can become larger if the output is still too big.
On Windows, Microsoft's documented path to show extensions is File Explorer → View → Show → File name extensions. Seeing full names makes comparison easier.
If the original will not open
If you know the extension was changed incorrectly, try restoring it on a copy. Renaming is not a repair for damaged or incomplete image data; obtain the original again first. FileMyLove converts images in your browser. Check the downloaded result in the application you will actually use to submit it.
