GLB vs glTF: Why Model Textures or Colours Go Missing

Check the companion files for a GLB or glTF model, load the complete set and inspect a converted copy without uploading your model.

By FileMyLove team2 min read

If a model opens with its shape intact but its logo or surface pattern is missing, check the companion files before converting it again. A delivery may include .gltf, .bin and several images.

How the files package a model

Khronos designed glTF for delivering and loading 3D scenes and models. GLB is its binary container, which can hold resources together.

What you received What to check
.gltf, .bin and images Include the referenced companion files
A single .gltf Resources may be embedded, or companions may be missing
A single .glb Convenient when self-contained, but the extension alone proves nothing

The specification permits both external and embedded images. GLB can also reference external resources, so do not assume a single received file is complete.

Open the set in FileMyLove

  1. Keep the complete original set and avoid renaming images before checking it.
  2. Open view 3D and select the main file plus companions for that model together.
  3. Rotate the view and inspect patterns, colours and important parts.
  4. Read any missing-file warning, then locate the named resource in the source delivery.

Our reader matches companion files you select locally by name. It does not download image URLs referenced by a model. If the images live elsewhere, request an export containing them from the model's creator.

If the complete set still looks different

A successful load does not establish support for every material or extension. We recommend comparing it with a reference image from the authoring program. For subtle colour differences, also check source lighting and materials. For an entirely absent pattern, start with the image files and their material links.

Avoid selecting unrelated models with identically named texture files together: the reader matches names. Testing one delivery at a time makes diagnosis easier.

Before exporting GLB

Use convert 3D, then reopen the result to inspect it. This converter is not an authoring-project backup and does not guarantee preservation of animations. Retain the original project.

For a print job, follow the print shop's requirements. Read STL, OBJ and 3MF for 3D printing: a convenient web-viewing format may not be the shop's preferred delivery format.
