Start by listening to the original MP4 before repeatedly converting it. The issue may be the source, playback settings or browser decoding support.
The extension does not tell the whole story
MDN describes a container as a format holding media streams. Playback support depends on the codecs as well as the container, so two MP4 files can behave differently.
FileMyLove's video transcription tool checks for an audio track. A missing track produces a specific error. A track that the browser cannot decode also cannot be transcribed by this tool.
Check in this order
- Play the source in your usual player and check the volume and output device.
- Listen to a section where someone is speaking, rather than only the introduction.
- Try the preview in video to text.
- Read the error and choose the appropriate next step.
| Symptom | Suggested action |
|---|---|
| The original is silent too | Find the recording before editing or request a copy with sound |
| No audio track is reported | Export from the source again with audio included |
| Another player works but the browser does not | Export a copy with audio your device can decode |
| Playback works but the transcript is empty | Confirm there is speech and check the selected language |
| The file exceeds the limits | Split it into shorter sections, keeping the original |
This table is a troubleshooting workflow, not an automated diagnosis of your file.
You do not need an MP3 first
Once you can hear the preview, select the spoken language and start transcription. Current limits are 100 MB and 20 minutes per file. You can edit, copy and download the text as TXT. Processing stays on your device; keep the page open.
Use video to MP3 if you also want a separate listening copy. Audio extraction cannot recreate missing speech and is not a required transcription step.
Check a short export before the full clip
Our suggested workflow is to retain the original, export a short sample and listen before exporting the whole recording. Name muted copies clearly to avoid selecting them later.
For intentionally removing sound, see GIF conversion and muting video. For reviewing the resulting text, see the interview transcription checklist.
