A logo that reads clearly in a website header can become unrecognisable on a browser tab. Start with a simple symbol and inspect it at a small size before creating an ICO. This guide prepares the file; installation happens in your website platform.
Choose artwork for a small space
We suggest using a main symbol or short initials instead of a full shop name and tagline. Check that colours and strokes remain distinct when viewed small, with enough margin around the artwork.
If the original contains excessive whitespace, prepare its bounds in the photo editor. For transparency, start with a PNG that actually has a transparent background. Renaming a file does not remove white pixels. See PNG, JPG and transparency.
Convert the logo to ICO
- Open convert image and select the PNG logo.
- Choose ICO as the output format.
- Convert and download. Keep the original PNG for later edits.
- Inspect the result before installing it on the website.
This converter places several sizes in one ICO file: 16, 32 and 48 pixels, plus 64, 128 or 256 when the original's long side reaches that size. A 256 × 256 source produces all six. This describes our tool, not a requirement that every website must use all six sizes.
What happens to a wide logo?
The converter keeps the proportions and centres the artwork in a square. It does not crop or stretch the logo to fill that square. A long horizontal logo therefore leaves space above and below, and its text may become very small.
| Original | Our suggested approach |
|---|---|
| A roughly square symbol | Convert and inspect at a small size |
| A long horizontal shop name | Prepare a separate simplified symbol |
| A tiny or unclear logo | Find a clearer source instead of expecting ICO conversion to add detail |
Install it and inspect the actual website
MDN describes the icon relationship used to identify a document's icon. If your website platform provides a Site icon or Favicon field, follow its accepted format and size requirements. Some platforms ask for PNG, so ICO conversion is not always necessary.
FileMyLove creates the file; it does not connect to or change your website settings. After installing the icon, open the actual site and check the displayed result. If the old image remains, check that the site references the new file and is not displaying a cached version before converting again.
