PSD to PNG: Why Layers Disappear and Which File to Keep

Share a PSD preview with someone without an editor, understand the saved composite, and keep the layered source for later changes.

By FileMyLove2 min read

Send a checked PNG copy to someone who cannot open PSD files, and keep the original PSD for future editing. FileMyLove reads the composite saved in the file; it is not a layer editor.

Composite image versus layers

The ag-psd documentation distinguishes composite image data from individual layers. It also explains that the library does not automatically redraw the composite after changes to text or blending information. FileMyLove exports from that saved composite.

The result is one picture, not editable objects. To change text, hide a layer or select another design variant, use the source editor and save or export the intended version first.

Match the deliverable to the task

Recipient’s task Our recommendation
Review the appearance Send a checked PNG
Edit components Share the source PSD and required resources
Upload to a JPG-only form Convert a copy and inspect its background
Use another layer combination Change the source and export that variant

Do not delete the PSD after conversion. Converting the PNG to another format cannot recreate its original layer structure.

Convert and compare

  1. Open Convert image and select the PSD.
  2. Choose PNG and convert in your browser.
  3. Download and compare the result with the source design.
  4. Check text, logos, shadows and objects near the edges.

Our additional check is version accuracy: inspect prices or dates on the artwork. The converter cannot know which variant you intended to deliver. If the result differs from the source editor, export PNG directly there and inspect it again.

When the composite is unavailable

Renaming the file to PNG does not fix missing image data. Open it in the source program, verify the design, then save a copy with a composite or export PNG directly. Preserve the original before experimenting.

Failure in this converter does not establish that the whole file is damaged. We do not promise to read every PSD variant. For printing work, check the delivery format with your print provider.
