Before Editing or Merging a Digitally Signed PDF

Keep the signed original, distinguish signature appearance from certificate validation, and request an unsigned source when document changes are needed.

Before correcting a typo or merging a signed PDF, keep the received file separately. A visible signature image does not establish the status of a digital signature. This guide covers file handling, not a legal determination about the document.

Identify the signing method

FileMyLove's Sign PDF tool places signature images and text onto pages. It does not apply a certificate signature or validate existing digital signatures.

Adobe explains that signing with a digital ID affects editing permissions and document locking. To inspect a certificate signature, open the original in software that supports validation; do not rely on a page preview alone.

Choose a workflow

Task Our suggested approach
Review a received document Retain the original and inspect signature status in supporting software
Correct text for a new signing round Request an unsigned version or source file
Add supporting documents Ask whether the recipient accepts separate attachments
Make a combined reading copy Label it as a copy and retain signed originals separately

Password removal is not a substitute for signature validation. The two operations serve different purposes.

Finish edits before the next signing round

  1. Preserve the signed file without overwriting it and record its sender and receipt date.
  2. If others signed, request an unsigned version from the document initiator, following Adobe's guidance.
  3. Edit that version using Edit PDF or its source application.
  4. Finish content and page-order checks. If needed, merge PDFs during preparation.
  5. Send the revised document through the recipient's required signing process and inspect the final file.

This is our suggested workflow, not a claim that every document accepts the same signing method.

Understand this site's limits

The merger creates a new document from copied pages, while the signing tool saves images onto pages. Do not use these paths expecting them to preserve or recreate the original certificate assurance.

For a reading copy, distinguish its filename clearly from the original. See editing and filling PDF forms for preparation before signing, and agree on delivery requirements with the recipient.
