Excel may interpret a product code such as 12/2 as a date. Check the column's intended meaning before accepting the type the application chooses, especially when returning data to its originating system.
Compare the original before saving
Microsoft gives an example of date-like input being converted and recommends formatting cells as Text before entering values that should remain text.
Our recommendation is to inspect a CSV copy in a text editor and compare it with Excel's display. If the original still has the correct codes, start again from that copy. Do not overwrite your only intact source.
| Fictional example | Decide from the source |
|---|---|
12/2 |
Code, text or an actual date? |
03-04 |
Preserve the zero and hyphen, or interpret a date? |
2026-10-29 |
Preserve date text, or calculate with a date value? |
An abbreviated month does not establish that the sender's intention was understood. Later cell formatting is not a substitute for checking the source.
Entering codes in Excel
For codes, select the column and set Text before entry, following Microsoft's instructions. Try a few fictional rows first; menus vary by version.
We advise against inserting spaces into CSV codes merely to avoid conversion. Those spaces may change what the recipient matches. Agree on the data type instead.
Convert a copy to XLSX
- Retain the original CSV.
- Open Convert document, select CSV and XLSX output.
- Download and compare codes containing
/or-with the source. - Check row and column counts plus records near the beginning, middle and end.
The converter keeps strings such as 12/2 and 03-04 as text, without creating dates. Ordinary numeric values may become numbers under its conversion rules; it does not force every cell to text.
When you need real dates
Specify date order and data types in the destination application before calculations. XLSX conversion alone does not make date-text columns calculation-ready.
For long codes or missing leading zeros, read long CSV identifiers in Excel. For shifted columns, see commas and line breaks in CSV, a separate issue from date interpretation.
