Fix a scanned PDF whose pages are out of order

Check front-and-back scan order, move and rotate pages manually, and review page transitions without confusing file position with printed numbers.

By FileMyLove1 min read

Scanning all fronts before all backs can leave a PDF that jumps between sections. Confirm the intended sequence before moving pages. Do not assume every file needs the same odd/even rearrangement: the way paper was reinserted can differ.

Write down the intended order

Our recommendation is to compare headings, continuing sentences and printed page numbers. Include covers and unnumbered pages in your list. These are illustrative cases, not automatic detection rules.

What you find Confirmed target
Cover → page 1 → page 3 → page 2 Cover → page 1 → page 2 → page 3
Complete content with upside-down pages Keep the sequence; rotate those pages
A passage is missing Check the original and rescan the missing page

Reordering moves existing pages; it cannot create missing content. See PDF positions and printed numbers when the viewer counter differs from the page itself.

Move pages in FileMyLove

  1. Keep the original and open Organize PDF.
  2. Use each page's arrow controls to move it one position at a time.
  3. Rotate upside-down pages with their rotation controls.
  4. Compare the sequence with your list.
  5. Download and open the result.

The tool copies pages in your selected order, using PDF-LIB's page-copying capability. It does not use OCR to infer the sequence.

Check transitions, not just the count

A correct page count does not prove correct order. Read the end of one page with the beginning of the next, especially across tables, appendices and signature sections. Inspect apparently blank pages before deleting them; see blank pages in duplex scans.

Keep the delivery copy separate

Name the result clearly and open that exact file before sending. Processing runs in the browser and creates a new file, leaving the original for comparison. Reordering does not rewrite printed numbers or guarantee preservation of every original bookmark.
